Boston North Chapter's Annual
GOOD FRIDAY VIGIL
Reading Town Common
Thanks to all who joined us, and for others who sent greetings, but could not be present.
Friends of the struggle against murder by public policy came from numerous towns.
I've probably missed some, but here is my list:
Lowell, Ipswich, Reading, Wakefield, Melrose, Jamaica Plain, Newton, Newburyport, Leominster, -- it was a GOOD Vigil.
Special was the greeting from Renny Cushing, of Murder Victims' Families for Human Rights, working so diligently for anti-death penalty action in New Hampshire, and nation-wide. We know we don't have to urge his vigilance, but can only take inspiration for ourselves.
Martina Jackson, from Mass Citizens Against the Death Penalty, was with us, continuing her regular participation in the Vigil.
Mike Festa, long active against the Death Penalty in the Mass. Legislature, joined us and his presence brings encouragement.
And did you see the "Lucy Gang"-- Grandparents, Pat and Dick, were joined by the littlest vigiler, Gardner, and others of the family. WOW!
The cars passing the town common were there by the thousands during the two hours; some drivers honked their horns and yelled support; at leat one man screamed that we should "kill the pirates", and behind that greeting was a reminder of the work we still have to do.
NOW is the time to do the real work. If you want to join in the efforts of the Boston North Chapter of the MCADP, please respond.

There
are 3 active local chapters currently operating in Massachusetts. They would all enjoy having new members join them or be happy to help you start one in your neighborhood!

MCADP
has been successful at keeping the Death Penalty out of Massachusetts,
but as recently as 1997 the issue came down to one tie-breaking vote!
There is also a persistent effort by federal prosecutors to bring
death penalty cases to trial in non-death penalty states. In the current
political climate, things are not going to get easier we need
to be active!
